Mansfield is mostly in Tarrant County, with small slices reaching into Johnson and Ellis counties, on the south-central edge of the Dallas–Fort Worth area. The city's own budget places it about 20 miles from Fort Worth and 25 miles from Dallas, and the 2020 Census counted 72,602 residents. Settlers arrived in the 1840s and 1850s, the Man and Feild grist mill went up between 1856 and 1859, and the city incorporated in 1890; today the city is reviving its Historic Downtown, while about 23 percent of its 36.7 square miles was still undeveloped as of the FY2024 budget. U.S. 287 and State Highway 360 both run north–south through town, giving an interstate move a direct line onto the regional highway network. Most students attend Mansfield ISD, and the Ellis County portion is zoned to Midlothian ISD. If you plan to load a portable storage container before moving day, Mansfield requires a city permit, valid for up to 30 days. Green Van Lines, founded in 2007 as the first eco-friendly moving company in the US, handles long-distance moves out of DFW from Farmers Branch, about 35 miles away.
