Cedar Hill sits on a ridge line south of Dallas, mostly in Dallas County with a small southern section in Ellis County. It had 49,148 residents at the 2020 Census and is approximately 25 miles south of Farmers Branch. US 67 is the main freeway through town, with FM 1382 and Belt Line Road as major local routes. The city borders Joe Pool Lake and Cedar Hill State Park. Housing follows the terrain: traditional tract homes from the 1990s and early 2000s east of US 67, and custom homes on lots of an acre or more in Lake Ridge along the lake's northern shore, where streets curve through wooded hills. Bear Creek, High Pointe and Waterford Oaks fill in between. City code bars trucks over one ton of rated capacity from parking in residential zones except for temporary loading and unloading, so the truck is loaded and on its way the same day. Cedar Hill ISD serves most of the city, with portions in Duncanville and Midlothian ISDs. Green Van Lines, founded in 2007 as the first eco-friendly moving company in the US, moves DFW households out of state.
