What eco-friendly moving actually means in practice

Reusable blankets, consolidated loads and honest routing. What eco-friendly actually looks like on a moving day in 2026.

Green Van Lines was founded in 2007 as the first eco-friendly moving company in the United States. That phrase gets used loosely in this industry, so here is what it means on an actual move day.

Reusable instead of disposable

Furniture travels wrapped in moving blankets, not in a layer of shrink wrap and cardboard that gets thrown away at the other end. Crates are built to be used again. Where boxes are needed, they are recycled stock, and we take them back when we can.

Consolidated loads

Two households moving to the same region on the same week do not need two trucks on the same interstate. Consolidating loads cuts fuel and emissions per move, which is also why some lanes price better when your dates are flexible.

Routing and driving

Route planning treats fuel as a cost to both the customer and the environment. That means sensible load sequencing, avoiding empty return legs where possible, and drivers who are not idling a truck outside a building for an hour.

What we will not claim

We will not tell you a move is carbon neutral because we planted a tree. The honest version is that a move has an environmental cost, and our job is to reduce what we can and be transparent about the rest.

The long version

Two decades of doing this has made the eco side ordinary rather than exceptional: it is how the crews are trained, how the trucks are loaded and how materials are bought. That is the point. It should not be a special request.
